X.O Cuisine

XO Chinese Cuisine (XO) is one of the most famous family chinese resto in Surabaya. It can only compared with some other elite resto such as The Duck King, Jade Imperial, Ahyat Abalone, or XO Suki (the same management with XO Cuisine). XO is a bit pricey, so when there was a buy 1 get 1 promotion from a credit card publisher, I can’t resist the temptation.

XO is located on the 1st floor of Tunjungan Plaza 4. Side by side with The Duck King and Pizza Hut. We agreed to order with price range between 25-30K, so we only paid for about 15K per menu (with buy 1 get 1 promo). I ordered Mie Casiu Suikiau (Charsew Shuijiao Noodle) and the rest of my friends ate Mie Ayam Panggang (Roasted Chicken Noodle), Nasi Goreng Hokian (Hokkianese Fried Rice), and Nasi Ayam Ikan Asin (Chicken & Salted Fish Fried Rice). And the 4 of us shared a bowl of Sup Pangsit Udang (Shrimp Wonton Soup).

Mie Casiu Suikiau is another kind of dumpling noodle, it reminds me to Cwi Kiaw Mie at Atom. But here, they boiled it instead of deep fried the dumplings. The suikiau dough was tender, stuffed with minced meat and mushroonm. Simple but so tasty. Some char siu meat sliced on top of the noodle -tasted sweet, it balanced the noodle and the suikiau. Sup Pangsit Udang also stuffed with the same dumpling, just like my noodle. It was calm but still tasted soupy. I didn’t taste the other dish, but all my friends ended up ate with smile on their face

Actually, the service was good. But the waitress DIDN’T smile at all ! It’s ok with me, but maybe others can lost their appetite Fortunately, the food cooked in nice taste harmony. Two thumbs up.

Yummy Candy Stripes

For me the term pig candy is an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms. Culinary wise, I do love most pig parts, albeit there are some I’m not too fond of. But turning pig into a candy bar, sounds a bit off, doesn’t it?!

My personal pig candy story is probably not too far from yours (if you’ve had the pleasure): I stumbled upon it on the net, sometime, somewhere, shook my head in disbelief and moved on. The term pig candy got cached somewhere in my mind next to thoughts around re-painting our living room and calling an old friend. Until Sebastian surprised us at an offbeat cook yourself business dinner with these nibbles. They are the incarnation of concentrated bacon flavor and anything but easy to swallow, you will either love or hate them! Some might say: “hm hm hm - wow” after the first bite and a second later “ok! been there done that“, but I’ve also witnessed someone diving head first into these - well, you tell me.
